The hole in the top will accept a piece of panio wire for an indicator and another piece of panio wire is used to attach to the throw bar of the turnout. The holder is designed to fit from the bottom into a 1 inch sub-roadbed. I have been using 1/4 plywood with 3/4 inch closed cell form (the pink or blue stuff). I hope you find this a usefull design. Update: The newer three files represent version 2 of the design. The images are of the new design mounted in 1/4" plywood with 3/4" foam board on top. The indicators on the stand are made from .032 piano wire and 3mm brass rounds. They have been painted with Rust-Oleum Rustic Slate Roof Accessory Paint.
